Submersible pumps work under the water to empty sumps, drain flooded basements and building sites, and move dirty or sewage water. We stock drainage pumps from 0.18kW, stainless-steel and cast-iron sewage pumps up to 45kW, and Vega pump pontoons for floating a pump in a dam or river. Looking for a pump to go down a borehole? Those are in our borehole pumps category.
- What is in the water? Clean rainwater or seepage needs a plain drainage pump. Muddy water, leaves and grit need a dirty-water pump with a vortex or open-channel impeller. Anything from a toilet or septic tank needs a sewage pump with a large free passage.
- How high must it lift? Add the depth of the sump to the height of the outlet above it, plus a little for pipe friction. Check that figure on the pump curve, not just the “max head” on the box.
- How fast must it empty? Flooding and construction dewatering need flow (m³/h); a small sump pit only needs a few hundred litres an hour.
- Automatic or manual? A float switch starts and stops the pump on its own, which is essential for sumps and lift stations.
- 220V or 380V? Up to about 2.2kW you have a choice; larger pumps are three-phase.
For dams, rivers and canals a Vega pump pontoon keeps the pump just under the surface, away from the mud at the bottom, so it lasts far longer.
Can I use a drainage pump for sewage?
No. Drainage pumps have small passages that block on solids and rags. Use a purpose-built sewage pump, which is designed to pass solids and often has a cutter or vortex impeller.
How deep can a submersible pump be installed?
Most drainage and sewage pumps are rated for 5–10 metres of submersion. For anything deeper, such as a borehole, you need a multistage borehole pump.
Can the pump run dry?
Only briefly. Running dry overheats the seal and motor. Fit a float switch, or a level controller, so the pump stops when the water is gone.
Do you supply spares and seals?
Yes, we supply seals, impellers and float switches for the ranges we sell. Contact us with the pump model.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a drainage pump and a sewage pump?
Drainage pumps handle clean or slightly dirty water with small solids, for example flooded basements or rainwater sumps. Sewage pumps have an open or vortex impeller, and sometimes a cutter, to handle sewage, fibres and larger solids.
How do I choose a submersible pump?
Choose by the liquid (clean, dirty or sewage), the flow you need, the height to discharge (head) and your power supply (220 V or 380 V). Add a float switch so the pump switches off automatically when the sump is empty.
Which submersible pump do I need?
- Clean or slightly dirty water (rainwater, flooded basements, pools and tanks): a drainage pump from our WSD range, in 220V or 380V.
- Water with solids (sewage, septic tanks and grey water): a sewage pump with an impeller that passes solids without blocking.
- Large volumes (mines, dams and municipal sumps): heavy-duty cast-iron raw sewage pumps from 5.5kW to 45kW.
Check how high the water must be lifted and how far it has to travel. The pump must deliver enough flow at that height, not just at zero lift. Our 220V drainage pumps have a built-in float switch; for other pumps, add a float switch so the pump starts and stops on its own. Never let a submersible pump run dry.
