Replacement submersible motors for 3″, 4″, 6″ and 8″ borehole pumps, from a 0.18kW 3″ motor at R1,690 up to 75kW 8″ water-filled motors, in 220V single-phase, 380V and 525V three-phase, plus DC motors for solar pump systems. If your pump end is still good, a new motor is the cheapest way to get the borehole running again.

Match the diameter: a 4″ pump end needs a 4″ motor. 4″ motors use the standard NEMA coupling, so brand does not have to match.Match the power: use the kW printed on the pump end’s nameplate. Never go smaller; one size bigger is acceptable if the original size is unavailable.Voltage: 220V single-phase for homes and plots, 380V three-phase for farms. Single-phase 3-wire motors need a control box with the start and run capacitors; check which type you have before ordering.Oil-filled or water-filled: our 3″ and small 4″ motors are oil-filled and economical. Water-filled motors are rebuildable and are the standard for 6″ and 8″ and for heavy-duty 4″ use.Cable: the motor lead must be joined to a drop cable sized for the depth. See the cable sizing chart.A submersible motor is cooled by the water flowing past it, so it must sit below the pumping water level with the pump end above it. In a wide borehole or a dam, fit a flow sleeve so water is drawn past the motor.
How do I know whether the motor or the pump end has failed?A motor that trips, hums or shows low insulation on a megger test has failed electrically. A motor that runs but delivers little water usually points to a worn pump end or a hole in the rising main. If you are unsure, send us the symptoms on WhatsApp.Can I fit a 380V motor to my existing 220V pump?Only if you have three-phase power at the borehole. The pump end does not care, but the motor must match your supply and you will need a three-phase control panel. What does the control box do?For single-phase motors the control box holds the start capacitor, run capacitor and overload. Without it the motor will not start properly. Many of our sets include it; otherwise order one with the motor.Do you deliver nationwide?Yes. Borehole motors are couriered across South Africa. Send the old motor’s nameplate photo to WhatsApp 012 881 1962 and we will match it.

Choosing a replacement motor

  • Size: match the motor diameter (4", 6" or 8") to your pump end and borehole casing.
  • Power: the motor's kW rating must match, or be slightly above, what the pump end needs.
  • Supply: 220V single-phase, 220V three-phase (for VSDs and solar pump inverters), or 380V and 525V three-phase.
  • Coupling: motors of the same size use standard couplings, so most pump ends fit. Our 4" motors fit Vega 4SD and 4ST pump ends of the matching power. Check the shaft and flange before ordering.

Oil-filled or water-filled?

Both work well. Water-filled motors can usually be rewound if they burn out, while oil-filled motors are fully sealed.

Protect a new motor with a borehole controller or VSD for dry-run, overload and phase-failure protection. Send us the details from your old motor's label on WhatsApp (012 881 1962) and we'll find the right replacement. Delivered nationwide.
