Sewage pumps move waste water that contains solids, from septic tanks, conservancy tanks, sumps, pump stations and grey-water systems. We supply cast-iron and stainless-steel submersible raw sewage pumps from 1.1kW to 45kW with 50mm, 80mm and 100mm outlets, in 220V and 380V, from R9,980. For lighter dirty-water jobs, see our drainage pumps and submersible pumps. Not sure which pump you need? Read our Sewage Pump Size Guide.
- Free passage: the most important spec. Raw sewage with rags and sanitary items needs a pump that passes 50mm solids or more, or a cutter pump. Grey water and septic effluent can use a smaller passage.
- Head and flow: add the depth of the sump, the height up to the municipal manhole or soak-away, and friction in the rising main. A 50mm pump suits a single house; 80mm and 100mm pumps are for estates, schools and pump stations.
- Material: cast iron is the workhorse for domestic sewage. Choose stainless steel (our WQK range) for aggressive, acidic or industrial effluent.
- Level control: every sewage pump needs a float switch or level controller. Pump stations should run two pumps in duty/standby with an alarm float.
- Voltage: 220V single-phase is available up to 1.1kW; larger pumps are 380V three-phase.
Send us the sump dimensions, the pipe size and the height to the discharge point, and we will size the pump and the level control for you.
What is the difference between a sewage pump and a drainage pump?
A drainage pump handles water with a little sand or silt. A sewage pump has an open impeller and a large free passage so it can move solids, rags and toilet paper without blocking.
Can I pump from my septic tank to the municipal sewer?
Yes. This is the most common use: a submersible sewage pump in a conservancy tank or sump, with a float switch, pumping up to the nearest municipal connection. Check with your municipality for the connection requirements.
How often should a sewage pump be serviced?
Lift the pump and check the impeller, seal oil and float once a year, or every six months in a busy pump station. Most failures are a jammed impeller or a stuck float, both of which are cheap to fix if caught early.
Do I need a cutter pump?
For grey water or septic tank effluent, a vortex pump is usually enough. For raw sewage straight from toilets or a conservancy tank, choose a cutter pump like our C-range, especially when the rising main is small-bore or long, or when rags and wipes are a known problem. Our Sewage Pump Size Guide explains how to choose.

How to choose a sewage pump
- Solids: check the largest solids the pump must pass. Channel and vortex impellers handle solids without clogging.
- Head and flow: the pump must lift the sewage to the discharge point and cope with the length of pipe.
- Power supply: larger pumps need 380V or 525V three-phase power. Check what is available on site before ordering.
- Automatic running: use float switches to start and stop the pump. For permanent pump stations, a duckfoot (auto-coupling) lets you lift the pump out for service without entering the sump.
Keep grease, wet wipes and rags out of the system, as they are the main cause of blocked pumps. Enzyme treatments like our sewage and fat destroyer products help keep sumps and septic tanks flowing.
