Solar borehole pumps run straight off solar panels, so you get water on a farm, plot or game lodge with no Eskom connection and no diesel. We stock 3″ DC solar pumps from 180W to 500W (3HR, 3HRI and LARS helical-rotor ranges) from R5,830, and 48V 4″ 4SD solar kits from R8,300. Each kit comes with the pump and its matching DC controller; add panels, cable and a storage tank and you have a complete system. For bigger boreholes, our solar pump inverters run a standard AC borehole pump from a panel array.

Solar pumps are sized on litres per day, not litres per hour, because they only pump while the sun shines. Work through these four points:Daily water need: a household uses roughly 150–200 litres per person per day; cattle about 50 litres a head; a vegetable garden depends on area. Add it up and add a margin.Total head: the pumping water level plus the height to the top of the tank plus pipe friction. Solar pumps lose flow quickly as head rises, so read the curve at your actual head.Sun hours: most of South Africa gives 5–6 peak sun hours a day in summer and 4–5 in winter. Size for winter if you need water all year.Panels: allow about 1.3 to 1.5 times the pump’s rated watts in panels, so a 500W pump wants 650–750W of panels, wired to the voltage the controller asks for.Helical-rotor (LARS) pumps give steady flow at high head from low yield boreholes; centrifugal (HR/HRI) pumps give more flow at moderate head. Always pump into a storage tank sized for at least two days of use, and let a float switch stop the pump when the tank is full. Send us your borehole depth, yield and daily need and we will put the kit together.
Do I need batteries? No. Solar pumps are designed to pump directly from the panels during the day and store water, not electricity, in a tank. Water in a tank is far cheaper than power in a battery. Will it work on cloudy days?It will pump at reduced flow. The controller tracks the available power and slows the pump rather than stopping it. A tank with two or three days of reserve covers the bad days. Can I run my solar pump off Eskom at night as well? Some controllers accept a mains or generator input as a back-up; our solar pump inverters for AC pumps can switch between solar and grid automatically. Ask us which models do this.Do you deliver and help with sizing?Yes. We courier solar pump kits nationwide and size the pump and panel array for you at no charge. Which solar borehole pump is right for you?

Choosing the right pump comes down to your borehole's water level (the depth to the water itself, not the total borehole depth), not just the size of the motor. A pump that's too small for your water level won't lift enough water, while an oversized pump costs more than you need. As a rule of thumb, choose a model rated for at least 25–30% more head than your actual water level, to allow for pipe friction and any future drop in the water table.

3HRI300-100 / 3HR300-100300W201SS / 304SS~75m

3HR750-140750W304SS~105m
3HR1200-1801200W304SS~135m

The 3HRI range (201 stainless steel) is our most affordable option, ideal for clean, neutral borehole water (pH 6.5–8.5). The 3HR range (304 stainless steel) is more corrosion-resistant and better suited to acidic, saline or harder water, and also extends to deeper 140m and 180m options.

How many solar panels do you need?

Every kit needs a solar panel array bigger than the pump's own wattage, typically 1.5–2 times the pump's power rating (see each product page for the exact panel wattage and an example panel count). This extra capacity covers cloudy days, cable and controller losses, and less-than-perfect sun angles, so your pump still gets full power when it matters.

Need more flow, or have a 4" borehole?

Our 4SD range covers deeper and higher-volume installations, from 41m up to 240m head, with both standard low-voltage DC kits and hybrid kits (TGP Hybrid Inverter) that switch to mains or generator power automatically when the sun isn't enough.
