Frequently asked questions
What size pool pump do I need?
Most home pools up to about 60,000 litres use a 0.75 kW pump. Choose 0.45 to 0.55 kW for small pools and 1.1 kW or more for large pools, solar heating or long pipe runs. The pump should turn the pool water over at least once every 8 hours.
Are variable speed pool pumps worth it?
Yes. A variable speed pump such as the Speck BADU Eco VSD Pro runs slower for most of the day and can cut pool pump electricity use by up to 70%, so it usually pays for itself within two to three years.
Can I replace my pool pump with a different brand?
Yes, as long as the kW rating is similar and the pipe connections match (usually 50 mm). Speck Porpoise and Quality Superflo pumps are common like-for-like replacements in South Africa.
What size pool pump do I need?
Your pool water should pass through the filter about once every 6 to 8 hours. For a typical home pool with a sand filter:
- 0.55kW – pools up to about 40,000 litres
- 0.75kW – about 40,000 to 60,000 litres, the most common size
- 1.1kW – about 60,000 to 80,000 litres, or pools with long pipe runs, a pool cleaner or water features
- 1.5kW – larger pools and systems with solar heating
Match the pump to your sand filter too. A pump that is too big for the filter wastes electricity and can push dirt through the sand. When replacing a pump, the easiest choice is the same kW rating as your old one.
Speck or Quality?
Quality Superflo 2 and Swimflo 2 pumps are an affordable, reliable choice for most home pools, with spares that are easy to find. Speck BADU pumps are German-engineered and known for quiet running, and the Speck Eco VSD Pro variable-speed pumps use much less electricity when run at lower speeds.
