Pool Pump Size Guide: What Size Pool Pump Do I Need?

Choosing the right pool pump size saves electricity, keeps your water clean and makes the pump last longer. Use this guide to work out your pool volume, pick the right kW rating and match it with the correct sand filter. Still unsure? The chart assumes a normal backyard setup with the pump close to the pool. Long pipe runs, solar heating panels on the roof or water features add resistance, so go one size up.

Step 1: Work out your pool volume

Measure in metres and use the average depth (shallow end plus deep end, divided by 2).

  • Rectangular pool: length × width × average depth × 1,000 = litres
  • Round pool: diameter × diameter × 0.785 × average depth × 1,000 = litres
  • Kidney or freeform pool: length × width × average depth × 850 = litres (approximate)

Example: an 8 m × 4 m pool that is 1 m at the shallow end and 2 m at the deep end has an average depth of 1.5 m. 8 × 4 × 1.5 × 1,000 = 48,000 litres, so a 0.75 kW pump with a 3-bag filter is the right fit.

Step 2: Turn the water over once a day

Your pump should filter the full pool volume at least once every 6 to 8 hours of running. For a 48,000 litre pool that is about 6 to 8 cubic metres per hour, which a 0.75 kW pool pump delivers comfortably at normal pool pressures. A bigger pump does not clean better; it just costs more to run and can push sand through the filter.

Step 3: Match the pump to your sand filter

The filter must handle the pump’s flow. A pump that is too big for the filter causes high pressure, poor filtration and sand returning to the pool. As a guide: 0.45 – 0.55 kW with a 2-bag filter such as the Quality Superflo Q80, 0.75 kW with a 3-bag Q120, 1.1 kW with a 4-bag Q160 and 1.5 kW with a 5-bag Q200.

Single speed or variable speed?

A standard single speed pump like the Speck Porpoise or Quality Superflo is the lowest upfront cost. A variable speed pump such as the Speck BADU Eco VSD Pro runs slowly for most of the day and only speeds up for backwashing or cleaning. Because pump power drops sharply at lower speed, it can cut pool electricity use by up to 70%. With a 0.75 kW pump using roughly 180 kWh a month, a variable speed pump usually pays back the price difference within two to three years, and it runs far better on an inverter during load shedding.

Solar pool pumps

If you want to take the pool off Eskom completely, a DC solar pool pump runs directly from solar panels during the day with no batteries. The Speck BADU Solar Smart can also run from AC power on cloudy days.

Replacing an old pool pump

Check the kW rating on the old pump’s label and replace it with the same size unless the pool was always cloudy or the pump struggled. Most South African pool pumps use 50 mm pipe connections, so a Speck Porpoise, Quality Superflo and Quality Swimflo of the same kW are usually direct replacements. If your pump only leaks or makes noise, a new mechanical seal or lid O-ring may fix it for a fraction of the price.

Frequently asked questions

What size pool pump do I need for a 50,000 litre pool?

A 0.75 kW pool pump, such as the Speck BADU Porpoise 16 or Quality Swimflo 2 0.75 kW, is the standard choice for a 50,000 litre pool. It will turn the water over in about 6 to 8 hours with a 3-bag sand filter.

Is a bigger pool pump better?

No. An oversized pump uses more electricity, can push sand through the filter and wears out faster. Match the pump to your pool volume and filter size, and only go bigger for solar heating, long pipe runs or water features.

How many hours a day should my pool pump run?

In summer most pools need 6 to 8 hours a day, and 4 to 6 hours in winter. The goal is to filter the full pool volume at least once a day.

How much electricity does a pool pump use?

A 0.75 kW pump running 8 hours a day uses about 6 kWh a day, or roughly 180 kWh a month. A variable speed pump such as the Speck BADU Eco VSD Pro can cut that by up to 70%.

Can I run my pool pump on solar or an inverter?

Yes. A variable speed pump draws the least power and starts softly, so it suits inverters and load shedding. For a fully off-grid option, a DC solar pool pump runs directly from solar panels.

Can I replace a Speck pump with a Quality pump, or the other way round?

Yes, as long as the kW rating is the same and the pipe connections match (normally 50 mm). Speck Porpoise, Quality Superflo and Quality Swimflo pumps are common like-for-like replacements.
